Why weighting up matters

Weighting up is one of the critical operations while drilling. You need to know how much weighting agent — barite, calcium carbonate, hematite, and so on — to add to reach the right mud weight and keep the well under control. Get it wrong and you risk a well control situation.

This calculator covers one specific case: how many sacks of barite you need to increase mud weight, in ppg. Barite has an average specific gravity of 4.2 (about 35 ppg), which is why 35 appears in the formula below.

Worked example

Find the sacks of barite needed to raise 500 bbl of mud from 10.0 ppg (W₁) to 13.0 ppg (W₂):

Sacks / 100 bbl = 1470 × (13.0 − 10.0) / (35 − 13.0) = 201 sacks (round up)

For the full 500 bbl system, total barite = 201 × 500 / 100 = 1,003 sacks. The calculator above runs the same math instantly for your own numbers.

How this is calculated

Based on 100 lb sacks of barite (specific gravity 4.2, or 35 ppg). The standard field formula is:

Sacks / 100 bbl = 1470 × (W₂W₁) / (35 − W₂)
Total sacks = (Sacks / 100 bbl) × Volume / 100

Where W₁ is current mud weight, W₂ is target mud weight (ppg), and Volume is total mud in the system (bbl). Note this adds volume to the system — for a fixed final volume you'll need to account for the barite volume separately.
