You’re making hole, everything’s smooth, then the driller calls – drawworks is lagging, brake response feels off, or worse, you’re hearing an abnormal groan from the transmission. NPT starts ticking, and everyone’s looking for answers. These aren’t just annoyances; they’re direct threats to your drilling schedule and budget.

Often, these aren’t sudden catastrophic failures but symptoms of neglected routine. The drawworks, the heart of your hoisting system, takes a beating. Ignoring the early warnings means a short trip to a major breakdown, requiring extensive repair work that could have been avoided with diligent, proactive maintenance.

Why Drawworks Issues Cripple Operations

The drawworks transmission is a complex system of chains, shafts, bearings, clutches, and brakes. Each component operates under immense stress, constantly cycling loads during tripping, running casing, and controlling bit weight. Failure in any part of this system can quickly cascade.

Lubrication is often the first point of failure. The forced lubrication system for chains and bearings relies on a gear pump to maintain pressure between 0.1 to 0.6 MPa (14.5 to 87 psi). If this pressure drops due to blockages or pump wear, friction surfaces rapidly degrade. A critical operational note: long periods of reverse rotation can starve a one-way gear pump, leading to oil starvation. Always ensure sufficient positive rotation to prime the system before extended reverse operations.

Chain drives, especially multi-line chains, are prone to wear and elongation. An elongated chain won’t seat properly on the sprockets, leading to uneven load distribution, accelerated wear, and eventually, catastrophic failure. Clutches, whether pneumatic or mechanical, depend on friction material integrity and precise air system control. Even minor air leaks can lead to sluggish engagement or disengagement, impacting driller control and safety.

Your Operational Approach: Beyond the Checklist

Effective drawworks maintenance isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about understanding what you’re looking for and why. Always ensure power is cut and locked out before any hands-on maintenance to prevent injury or accidental operation.

Shift Maintenance: The Daily Pulse Check

Your daily routine is critical for catching early symptoms.

  • Lubrication System: Check the oil tank level via the sight glass. Refill promptly if low. Verify the lubricating oil pressure gauge reads between 0.1-0.6 MPa. Walk the system, inspecting all pipelines for leaks and nozzles for blockage.
  • Mechanical Integrity: Inspect all connecting bolts between the drawworks and substructure, fast line clamp bolts, and disc brake device fasteners. Any looseness must be addressed immediately.
  • Control Systems: Test all control handles, knobs, and pushbuttons at the driller’s console. Check the locking shift mechanism for proper function and pressure gauge accuracy. Listen for air leaks in pipelines and confirm the rapid escape valve of the auto driller clutch is clear.
  • Temperature & Sound: Perform a hand-touch check or use an IR thermometer on all shaft end bearings. A temperature rise exceeding 35°C above ambient, or an absolute temperature above 85°C, indicates a serious problem. Listen for any abnormal sounds from transmission parts – grinding, knocking, or excessive whining are red flags.
  • Brake System: Confirm water flow from the electromagnetic eddy current brake overflow. Test the O-matic valve: with drawworks stopped, engage the drum clutch, manually trigger the deflector rod. The clutch should rapidly disengage, and both service and emergency disc brake calipers should respond quickly.
  • Grease Points: Lubricate all grease points as per the nameplate, typically using NLGI2 extreme pressure lithium base grease. Note that input shaft bearings often require a specific 2 white special lithium base grease.

Weekly & Monthly Deep Dives

These checks go beyond daily observations, focusing on wear and system health.

  • Weekly: Inspect the suction oil filter core of the lubrication system. Clean or replace if blocked. Assess lubricating oil quality; if it looks degraded or emulsified, replace it. Check the gap between disc brake tongs and the brake disc, adjusting as needed. Measure wear on disc brake blocks and clutch friction plates; replace if wear exceeds permitted limits (e.g., friction plate thickness reduced to 2/3 of original).
  • Monthly: Open inspection windows to visually check chains, chain plates, pins, and rollers for cracks, distortion, or excessive wear. Inspect the air bags of air tube clutches for aging and replace if necessary. Verify working clearance between friction catheads, adjusting shims to maintain the specified 0.8-1.5mm (0.03-0.06in) gap. Check brake disc wear; replace if required. Crucially, check accumulator pressure in the disc brake system and charge nitrogen if low.

Yearly Overhaul: The Full System Reset

A comprehensive yearly inspection is vital for long-term reliability. This includes tightening all fasteners, checking all lubrication and cooling pipelines, inspecting and replacing excessively worn clutch mechanisms, sprockets, and chains. Clean the oil tank completely and replace all oil seals. Pay close attention to input shaft coupling alignment; radial and end face runout should not exceed 0.1mm (0.004in) and 0.05XDmm (where D is measuring diameter) respectively.

Decision Checklist for Drawworks Health

  • Daily (Shift): Lubrication pressure (0.1-0.6 MPa), bearing temperatures (max 85°C), control responsiveness, air system integrity (no leaks), abnormal sounds.
  • Weekly: Lube oil quality (visual/test), brake pad wear, clutch friction plate wear.
  • Monthly: Chain condition (elongation, damage), air bag aging, brake accumulator pressure.
  • Before Rig-Up/After Major Repair: Input shaft coupling alignment (max 0.1mm runout), chain coplanarity (max 1mm difference).
  • Anytime: Unexplained vibration, erratic braking, or unusual noises.

Failure Modes & Lessons Learned

Lubrication System Failure: If you see bearing temperatures climbing or hear excessive friction, immediately check lube pressure. A common issue is a blocked filter or a failing gear pump. Remember the reverse rotation caution for gear pumps – a few minutes of positive rotation can prevent pump damage.

Chain Transmission Catastrophes: Excessive chain elongation (more than 3% or half a chain pitch) is a death sentence for your chains and sprockets. Never mix new and old chains; the uneven pitch will rapidly destroy both. When replacing, ensure proper alignment (coplanarity and parallelism) between chain wheels, with a maximum difference of 1mm (0.04in). Adjust with shims or baffle sleeves.

Air Clutch Malfunctions: If a clutch won’t engage or disengage, first check air supply pressure and for leaks in the bladder or lines. Grease contamination on friction surfaces will drastically reduce torque transmission – clean thoroughly with solvent. If you must use an “accident bolt” to bypass a clutch, never engage the high-speed drum clutch if the low-speed clutch is bypassed this way. This can severely damage the transmission. Post a clear warning at the driller’s console.

Bearing Overheating: Beyond lubrication issues, misalignment during assembly can cause rapid bearing failure. When disassembling or reassembling shafts, use pullers for interference fits. If heating is necessary to remove or install bearings, maintain strict temperature control (max 200°C) and ensure even heating to avoid shaft damage. Gas cutting for bearing removal is strictly prohibited.

Control System Gremlins: Air or hydraulic control valves can stick due to rust or impurities, especially after periods of inactivity. Before dismantling a valve, systematically check air/fluid supply, pipelines for blockages, and listen for leaks. Often, manually cycling a sticky valve a few times can resolve the issue without needing to replace components.

The drawworks is the unsung hero of your drilling operation. Treating its maintenance as a critical, ongoing process, rather than a reaction to failure, will pay dividends in reduced NPT and extended equipment life.
