Check the tensile safety factor and margin of overpull against the rated body yield or joint strength of a pipe.
The tensile safety factor is simply how many times stronger the pipe is than the load it will actually see. A factor of 1.0 means you are right at the rating with nothing to spare; most operators design to a minimum tensile safety factor — commonly around 1.3 to 1.6 — so there is margin for overpull, shock loads, and uncertainty. The margin of overpull is the same idea in pounds: how much extra pull you have before you reach the rating.
Use the pipe’s body yield when the body is the weak link, or the joint / connection strength when the connection governs — always design to whichever is lower.
Both values in lbs. Pull the rated body yield and joint strength for your pipe from the tubular data tables, and use the actual expected hook/string load (remember to account for buoyancy, drag and any overpull you plan).

A pipe rated at 746,000 lbs body yield carrying an actual load of 500,000 lbs: safety factor = 746,000 / 500,000 = 1.49, with a margin of overpull of 246,000 lbs before reaching yield.
